Tuesday’s basketball schedule might not have the marquee matchups that last Friday did, but it can definitely hold its own.
Especially on the girls’ side of the court.
The 956sports.com No. 5-ranked Harlingen Lady Cardinals travel to No. 1-ranked Weslaco with the District 32-6A lead at stake (6 p.m. tip off). Harlingen, winners of eight straight game and perhaps the hottest team in the RGV, is 8-1 in district play. Weslaco is also 8-1, and they are a playing very good brand of basketball as well. The Lady Panthers have their own winning streak to brag about – seven in a row.
Harlingen comes in with a balanced attack led by junior Nadia Flores’ 10.5 points per game. Any player on any given night can have a big game for Weslaco, but Brianna Pena typically leads the Lady Panthers and had 18 points in Friday night’s win over Brownsville Hanna.
It had been at least three years since the PSJA Memorial Lady Wolverines had won a district game. Now they are flat out on a roll. The No. 6-ranked Lady Wolverines (19-12, 7-2) play host to former No. 1 Edinburg High (25-6, 8-1) at 6 p.m.). The Lady Bobcats are looking to bounce back after falling to Edinburg Vela last Friday. PSJA Memorial has won six of it’s last eight including the last four in a row.
The boys’ lack the big games the girls have this week, still, each game is important for district races, and one very intriguing match up is a resurgent Rio Grande City team at Sharyland Pioneer. Both teams are fighting for a playoff spot. Pioneer is led by hot-shooting Jordan Wilson, who’s averaging 19 points per game and had 40-point game recently. Meanwhile, not to be outdone, RGC’s Rodrigo Nunez is averaging 20 points per game.
As the season draws closer to a close, there appears to be some separation developing between the haves and have nots. But there’s still lots of basketball to play and nothing, absolutely nothing, has been settled.
